Rant #3 Without Free Speech Or Freedom Of The Press We Will Have No Freedom At All

“If any man, therefore, thinks he has been censured*, if any man thinks he has been ridiculed upon any of our public theatres, let him examine his actions he will find the cause”James Burgh – “Political Disquisitions 3:246-52 1775

Thomas Jefferson felt that to suppress the freedom of the press was to suppress the only safeguard of the public liberty. He writes, “…if it to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.” Some may say that the internet is something the Founding Fathers did not envision and that the freedom to write opinions on a blogs should be regulated. I would have to agree that the Founding Fathers did not envision the internet but beg to differ on regulating opinions of citizens on the internet. Thomas Jefferson let it be known that he believed that public papers “..should penetrate the whole mass of the people.” From this I believe that the Founding Fathers would not have tried to sensor the internet but rather embrace it.

The Virginia Declaration of Rights, Sec. 12 12 June 1776 went as far as to say, “That the freedom of the press is one of the great bulwarks of liberty, and can never be restrained but by despotic governments.” They are saying that the freedom of the press is the great wall that defends liberty and only a tyrannical government would wish to restrain it. In Congress, Amendments to the Constitution June to Sept. 1789 they debated to great lengths to protect the peoples rights of religion, free speech, free press, the right of people to peaceably assemble and to petitions the government for a redress of grievances. Some thought the freedom of the press and free speech was self evident yet they wisely pursued language that would prevent Congress from ever taking those rights from citizens.

Today we find our government not only trying to censor free speech by declaring the internet a utility so they can regulate it they are trying to take over the news media as well. If one was to believe that the Virginia Declaration of Rights mention of those who would restrain the freedom of press our current elected officials would not be in good company. Of course when one looks at socialism and Marxism, which is what progressives are pushing for, you get a cold chill down your spine as you realize they don’t care. Once the freedom of speech and the freedom of press is gone you will not get it back. When those freedoms are gone the rest will fallow. Pay attention or pay the price and have your children and grandchildren remember you as the one who helped put the shackles around their neck as they live their lives as slaves. These are the people our Founding Fathers warned us about and if you stay silent so are you.

“…the people will always be found to be the best army. They may be led astray for a moment, but will soon correct themselves. The people are the only censors of their governors: and even their errors will tend to keep these to the true principles of their institution.”   Thomas Jefferson to Edward Carrington16 Jan. 1787 Paper 11:48-49
